Morning all, just wondering if anyone else takes a once weekly alendronic tablet to help strengthen bones, just taken mine now.
I was put on it about 2-3 yrs ago after having a bone scan.
When going for my monthly infusions I have met patients who have an annual infusion of alendronic acid just wondering how it is decided who has which, and whether the same protection is given by both.
Any ideas? Zena xx

Hi Zena - that's a new one on me! Is that for osteo-porosis?

Hope you're well - Sylvia xx

Yes you are right, Sylvia, but is often given before it gets to that stage.
Very often Vit D and Calcium are given as these will help. Personally I
don't like the chewy or sucking type so buy the tablets from Chemist and
make sure I take plenty of both in my diet. Many ladies get problems
with osteoporosis after menopause but if we've had steroids it can be more
of a necessity. Anne

Hi both, I have read that apparently we have a greater chance of getting osteo-porosis with ra, as you say partlly because of steroids use, but also because we are more than likely to be less active, and thus less able to exercise.
This is definately so for me, plus the fact that I had an early menopause. It is worth asking about if yourself if concerned and no one has picked up on it.
I would not be taking anything, not even calcichew if I had not asked for a bone scan myself in the first place after being diagnosed at the age of 56. I have had 2 scans so far, and am due for another in the new year. Each time I have to ask myself for it, even though it is advised each time in my results.
Keep well and warm,
Zena xx

Thanks for that info ladies - I guess that's even more reason to get whatever exercise we can manage - I'm trying to do more walking at the moment, because my feet are feeling better, but it helps that I use poles for better balance.

Has anybody else had a bone scan?

Sylvia xx

Zena

I was on the alendronic tablets once a week for 6 years. Had a bone scan every 3 years and after the 6 year one they decided I did not need to take them anymore. Still have to take Calcichew twice a day.

Best wishes
Lisa

What good news Lisa, didn't realise it could do so much good. Just thought it would slow the process down.
Thanks for such a possitive coment.
Zena xx.
